I am sure everyone at MPCC will join me in wishing players favourite Julian Davies a safe journey as he heads off to Australia to support England's Ashes campaign. All Over For Another Year...............

And so the last winner of the season was the rain as our anticipated trip to Westminster fell foul of the weather before a ball was bowled.

Those that attended made use of their free time by enjoying the hospitality of Metropolitan Police colleagues before wending their way to Watford for a hastily organised tour of some of the towns social and culinary establishments. I genuinely had no idea we had so many fine dining enthusiasts in the team, as McDonalds, Subway and the Turkish Delight Kebab retailer all got visited.

Some enjoyed the dining experience so much they had it twice (see photo).
Naturally, given there was no play, some of the winners of the years plethora of awards were decided: -
MPCC 2010 Run Machine
Neil Eggleston
MPCC 2010 Bowling Machine
Graham Footitt
MPCC 2010 Cat Like Fielder
Rem Fiorini
Well done to everybody who took part in whatever capacity in 2010. Thanks for your support. There will be an MPCC for as long as people want one.

MPCC Take It To The Church!

A cold, windswept Beeston Fields greeted the hardy MPCC XI as they arrived for their encounter with Church of the Assumption.

Losing the toss, MPCC were unsurprisingly put in to bat on a bog of a track that had seen three hours of solid rainfall that morning.

Given that it was beneath regular opener and all round gloryhound Eggleston to turn upon time, skipper Pete Quinn turned to Carl Gabbitas to pair up with the evergreen Darron Hall.

From the first ball it was apparent that it was going to be a long day as the pair had to wait until the fourth over for their first run on a slow, turgid pitch.

The pair soldiered on, grabbing singles where possible with the boundary rope appearing elusive.

Inevitably, CACC struck, with Darron Hall unlucky to be caught of his glove for 4 in the eighth over.

Mark Davies came in next, with instructions from the Captain to hang around (instructions that are given every game and duly ignored every game). Spike got off to a good start being the first MPCC batsman of the day to find the boundary but was quickly on his way back finding himself clean bowled having damaged the scorecard to the tune of 6 runs.

Neil Eggleston, having decided he could be arsed, took to the field at No.4. Eggleston and Gabbitas worked hard to set up a partnership which began, albeit slowly, to yield results as both hit a steady trickle of runs. The relief was not to last however as just as the sky's began to brighten and the MPCC contingent watching from the sidelines began to think we may have turned a corner, Carl Gabbitas edged to the wicketkeeper for 10.

Pete Quinn came in at No.5 and immediately entered into a mid-over con flab with Eggleston over the way forward. I'm not sure what was decided but it was quickly undone as Neil, going for runs the team so badly needed top edged sending the ball high but short, presenting CACC with a straightforward catch and sending Neil back to the pavilion for 11.

Rich Blackwell came in at No.6 with MPCC woefully short of a competitive number of runs for the overs used. Pete and Richard went the way of the other pairings, grabbing singles where possible but struggling to connect with some, at times, very average bowling that just didn't pitch up. Pete was the first to fall foul of the desperate pursuit for runs, chipping a legside ball to square leg for an easy CACC catch for 3.

Brian Costello came in at No.7 and continued in the vein that has shown him to be a much improved batsman in 2010. A partnership began to take shape as Rich supported Brian well as both managed to score regular singles interspersed with that Holy Grail of a boundary.

Blackwell's aerial approach inevitably saw him caught a short while later for 8.

Rem Fiorini came in at No.8 and also got off to a flying start, finding the boundary with apparent ease. The same approach with his next shot however did not prove as effective as he presented CACC with a catching opportunity that they gleefully seized, dismissing Rem for 4.

Graham Footitt came in at No.9 with MPCC looking in trouble and desperately short of a defendable target. With Brian still at the crease and few overs remaining, Graham took a
no-nonsense approach and the runs began to come.

The purple patch was soon foiled as Brian was clean bowled for a gratefully received 17.

Andy Lewin came in at No.10 looking to support Graham only to see him dismissed LBW a short while later for 13.

Julian Davies came in at No.11 but it was all over moments later as Andy Lewin was caught for 3 leaving MPCC all out for 90 and staring an early finish in the face.

Unlike previous fixtures where the team have found themselves up against it, MPCC took to the field in buoyant mood, reinforced by a silent determination not really experienced before.

Carl Gabbitas (having to leave early for work........commitment!) was asked to bowl his 8 overs through from the start paired for the first 4 by Graham Footitt.

It was clear from the first over that CACC were going to struggle in the same manner Mansfield Police had and that perhaps this was not going to be the walkover we feared.

Both bowled outstanding line and length and, as is becoming a habit, it was Footitt that was rewarded first, trapping CACC's Usman LBW off the back of perhaps the best MPCC appeal heard all season.

Gabbitas followed suit a short whilst later as CACC's Naveed hit high in the pursuit of runs only to see "bucket-hands" Blackwell take the catch.

Neil Eggleston replaced Graham Footitt and used his pace well to present the batsmen with horrible balls that skidded off the surface in all manner of direction.

Neil was quickly quickly rewarded as the CACC No.3 skyed one to the waiting hands of Brian Costello.

Moments later, Eggleston struck again taking a spectacular catch from his own bowling and giving MPCC a robust reason to believe that an unlikely victory was possible. This belief was compounded when Neil clean bowled the next batsmen to take two wickets in two balls.

With Carl Gabbitas having finished his spell with very respectable figures of 8.0.16.1 the skipper looked to Darron Hall and Brian Costello to take the team closer to victory.

Darron continued with good work started by Gabbitas at his end whilst Brian, frustrated by the damp conditions and a gnawing back injury struggled to devastate as he had done in recent matches.

The pairing continued in the rich vein of form demonstrated by the previous bowlers however as Darron Hall took a well deserved wicket from a lean 4 over spell that only gave the visitors 11 runs as he bowled CACC's No.7.

With Brian's injury dominating his bowling, he was replaced by a reluctant Mark Davis. Spike's reluctance was proved unfounded however as in his first (and only over) he uprooted the leg stump of CACC's No.8

With only CACC's Summers standing between MPCC and a frail looking CACC tail, the skipper looked to the accuracy of Footitt to bring a wicket. It proved to be an instinctive piece of Captaincy as Summers was dislodged early into Graham's over, the bowler getting the thinnest of edges which flew into wicketkeeper Quinn's gloves to scenes of delirious celebration behind the stumps and bewilderment on the face of the bowler until the batsmen graciously walked.

CACC's Harris was next in. Taking a big swing he did nothing more than top edge straight to the waiting hands of Spike Davis, giving Graham two in two and MPCC the chance of arguably the most dramatic victory in thier short history.

The CACC No.11 trudged into position clearly not fancying it. Graham, showing nothing but contempt for the fellow's seniority in years bowled a peach, destroying his leg stump and completing the hat trick.

MPCC had won by 24 runs in the most unlikely of circumstances and loved every minute of it.

For the Captain personally, this was perhaps the most satisfying victory in the clubs history (just beating Woodborough away the year before I reckon??). The work ethic in terms of bowling and fielding was nothing short of brilliant and everybody in the team did their bit to secure victory.

As always, the man of the match candidates were many, Brian Costello with a useful run total, Neil Eggleston for another 3 wicket haul. However, as should surprise nobody, with 13 runs and 4 wickets in 6 overs for only 6 runs, 3 of which making up his hat-trick there could be only one winner. Graham Footitt.

Police Maul Luxfer

Unfortunately, the match report for this fixture, eloquently scribed by brother Eggleston cannot be copied onto the blog because of opposing formatting software in both word and the blog (like I have any idea what that means????)

Needless to say, you thrashed them, Eggy was 71 not out and got 3 wickets for only 7 runs in 2 overs winning him man of the match.

The end.

Police Crush Coddington

It was a makeshift but buoyant MPCC XI that took to the field in the unfamiliar territory of the Quarry Ground in Mansfield, our home for the day owing to Thorseby's extended cup run.

Winning the toss, skipper Pete Quinn put the visitors in to bat, not really knowing what to expect from a track that only 48hrs earlier had been immersed in rainwater.

With his regular opening attack of Gabbitas and Davies absent, Pete looked to Graham Footitt and Darron Hall to take responsibility for the opening overs. Sadly for both bowlers, an unbelievably tight spell of 8 overs (4 each) which yielded only 8 runs for the visitors was not rewarded with a wicket.

Looking for the elusive wicket, the Captain turned to a mixture of pace in Neil Eggleston and a little unorthodox slow right arm from Glenn Longden. It soon became apparent that the pitch was going to be the winner, with Neil's pace restricting the run total to a trickle but never looking like yielding a wicket. Glenn however had clearly been practising with the kids again as from the first ball he had the batsmen in all sorts of trouble with an unpredictable bounce and a flurry of good length balls. Glenn's accuracy was quickly rewarded as Coddington opener Bedford edge one into the safe hands of specialist slip fielder Rem Fiorini. A moment later, lightning did strike twice as the remaining opener Perrett edged a Longden length ball high but not high enough to evade the outstretched hands of a diving Fiorini.

With Neil intimidating at one end, Glenn sensed more wickets were for the taking and took no time cleaning up Coddington's No.4 Smith with a vicious inswinger.

The visitors, by now in turmoil, looked nervous as a further bowling change saw Rich Blackwell make a rare appearance in the bowlers column alongside MPCC "guest for the day" Dave Priest.

Priest looked dangerous from the start with an armoury of spin, swing and bounce that the batsmen couldn't pick. Looking for runs that they so badly needed, Coddington's B. Hazeldine was clearly looking to go after the bowlers but only managed to chip one up to a grateful Graham Footitt at cover.

After a wild start, Blackwell soon settled down and was rewarded as he found the edge of Curtis's bat leading to a spectacularly low, one handed catch by slip maestro Fiorini.

The writing was on the wall for Coddington as Priest continued with his impressive spell, first cleaning up Feltimo for 0 before removing D. Hazeldine who hit high and long only to be caught by Blackwell at Long On.

Blackwell returned at the other end, and despite Coddington finding the boundary from a couple of balls did not lose his way, soon finding the edge of Wilcox's bat with wicketkeeper Quinn taking the catch.

Priest continued, wrapping things up in style with wickets of Crossland and Curtis to leave him with fine figures of 5/0/12/5 and leaving Coddington all out for a difficult to defend 68.

Regular openers Darron Hall and Neil Eggleston took to the field confident of an early victory. The unpredictable bounce of the Quarry track however seemed to curse both side as the opening par struggled to get the ball away. Just as a partnership began to emerge, Eggleston found himself caught LBW to the bowling of Smith for an uncharacteristic 7.

Pete Quinn was next to the crease, looking to improve on what had thus far been a fairly miserable season with the bat. Pete and Darron soon developed a partnership which saw a regular flow of ones and two's to keep the score ticking along nicely.

With the end in sight, and a valuable "not out" on the cards for Quinn both batsmen began to relax. it was not to be however as Perrett found the edge of Quinn's bat, only for the Coddington wicketkeeper to take a great catch stood up to the stumps.

Glenn Longden came in next with little to do as MPCC were almost home. Darron and Glenn successfully chipped off the remaining runs with ease giving MPCC a well deserved 8 wicket victory.

All in all an excellent performance against an admittedly weaker Coddington XI. With regular bowlers Gabbitas, Davies and Costello all missing it was satisfying to see other players step up to the mark with success which just goes to show the depth of the squad in terms of bowling.

As always, a number of candidates made compelling cases for the man of the match award, notably Rem Fiorini for a fine fielding display and Glenn Longden for some great bowling. However, with a 5 wicket haul on debut, the man of the match award goes to a deserving Dave Priest.

We have never played these boys before but they turn out for somebody every week so I am expecting a reasonable team. I will have ground details soon, but am aware that they play in Beeston, Nottingham or very close to. I have backed this up with an email so replies in the usual way appreciated.

Volunteer Wanted

I (PQ that is) will not be available for the re-arranged game against Luxfer Gas on Wednesday 18th August. As such, I am looking for a volunteer to take care of all the sh*te I normally do (kit, money, pay for pitch, contact opposition, match report etc etc). Sssshhhh.............it's all gone quiet over there!

Trip to the Test a Success

Thanks to those that turned out to MPCC's trip to Trent Bridge to watch the 3rd day of the 1st NPower Test Match between England and Pakistan. I think it's fair to say the touring party had a good day. We learnt that Rem went to Grammer School which was where he perfected his "cupping" technique, Daz has had a hit single and Gabby is a regular visitor to Truro. Some of us also learnt that 16 pints gives you very little love the following morning!

A Little Close For Comfort At Toton!

A makeshift MPCC XI (well 10 actually) made the awkward journey to Long Lane for the annual match up with Toton & Beeston Sycamore.

As usual, the Toton XI was full of young bucks looking to use Sunday cricket as means of breaking into the Toton league set up.

Having been asked to bat by the Toton skipper, it was left to Spike Davis and Pete Quinn to open (Eggy's watch battery had packed up again).

It was clear from the off that the bowling of the young Toton side wasn't quite as mediocre as the coach might have had us believe with Blunt taking the wicket of the ever impatient Spike Davis in the first over.

The middle to tail were finding themselves in the spotlight as, with Eggy still not on plot, Carl Gabbitas came in at 3. Pete and Gabby began putting a partnership together which was probably as frustrating to watch as it was to participate in. Despite thier best efforts, both batsmen struggled to get bat on ball and the rate began to drop to below 3 an over.

The pair stuck it out for 15 overs until Pete Quinn was clean bowled by Toton's Pepperday for 16.

Having finally arrived in his own time, Eggy strode on to the pitch with the whole team looking for the batsmen to step on the gas. Even opener Eggleston found it tough going however on an artificial wicket that gave very little but unpredictable bounce.

The pair tried to get a partnership going with some success but a mere 6 overs later, Gabbitas was making his way back to the pavillion having been clean bowled by Wright for a very useful 31.

Guest batsmen Craig Wathall was next and MPCC sensed fireworks. Eggy, riding his luck on a couple of aerial shots previously, found his luck had run out 5 overs later as he was caught off the bowling off Pepperday for 23.

Brian Costello was in next and with 13 overs to go the instruction was to hang around and bat out the overs. Despite a positive start with a boundary, Brian was dismissed 3 overs later off the bowling of Blunt for 4.

Rem Fiorini came in at 7, not doubt apprehensive about his role as wicketkeeper later in the game, his mind seemed elsewhere and by the 30th over, MPCC were 6 wickets down as Fiorini was caught for 2.

The familar collapse looked on as Graham Footitt took to the field, desperate to improve what had thus far been a pretty miserable season with the bat.

Graham started as he meant to go on and much to everyones delight, the ball began to find the boundary with regular ease.

Wathall's cameo came to end shortly after Graham's introduction, being caught going large in the later overs for 12.

Andy Lewin, a last minute fitness test selection that morning took to the field for the first time this season but was very quickly back again for 0.

Last man and guest star Ian Johnson came in with instructions to keep Graham on strike and keep him on strike he did as MPCC managed 150 runs in the 40 overs, assisted by an outstanding contribution of 35 not out from Graham.

The mood had changed as MPCC took to the field. Pete Quinn had relinquished the gloves to Rem Fiorini and the team were upbeat that this was a total that could be defended on an artifical wicket and slow outfield. This feeling was galvanised when the ever reliable Carl Gabbitas struck in the first over, causing Toton's Burman to top edge into Fiorini's gloves.

Only a few moments later, Toton's Ahmed was gone, clean bowled by Spike Davis.

Toton's Atkinson came in next and under the guidance of Toton's skipper Wright, a partnership was begininng to form. This was to short lived however as Eggleston trapped Atkinson LBW a short time later.

Sensing a collapse, the mood in the field was one of exhuberance. The carnival atmosphere was soon to be dampened however by the stubborness of Toton's Wright and Plumbley. The pair batted very well, despite a peppering from all concerned, they had contributed 74 of Toton's total before Gabbitas, returning for his second spell took Wright's middle stump.

Tidewell was in next for Toton, but was simiarily dispatched by the evergreen Gabbitas for 0 and MPCC began to sniff victory.

Dove was in next for Toton and yet more resistance. Plumbley scored freely as Dove held up an end well. It took the wizardry of Brian Costello to dispatch Dove just as MPCC began stare defeat in the face.

The game was there for Toton to win. 17 runs required in 7 overs with 3 wickets left should have been a breeze but chaos ensued (I think we've actually found a team that argue more than we do).

Pepperday stepped up next and it was clear from the offset that he was looking to open his big, butch shoulders and finish the game early. It wasn't to be. Clearly not built as nimble as Plumbley, the big man refused his colleagues call to run leaving them both stranded at the non strikers end and Rem with the easiest run out of the game.

Booth was in next and looked nervous. The infamous MPCC chirping at the batsmen came into play as they sensed an unneccessary urgency within Toton's ranks. Chaos ensued again as moments later, Booth was the subject of a controversiol run out decision for 0.

In came Chamberlain with the game still there to win with easy singles. By now Footitt and Eggleston had the responsibility to wrap the game up and the team came one step closer as Footitt delivered a killer ball to dispatch Pepperday and leave 10 and 11 to find the runs to win the match.

Nerves got the better of the tailenders. With the finish line in sight Chamberlain smashed one to his legside only for Andy Lewin to dive and make a fine stop. With the batsman stranded halfway down the track, Lewin threw the ball for Rem to remove the imaginary bails (private joke, Toton didn't bother with bails on Sunday????) for the third time that day and give MPCC the victory by 6 runs.

As the skipper walked into the dressing room, the match was summed up as perhaps the best and worst victory of the season so far. The worst in so much as we still seem exceptionally fragile when batting first. The best in that the team never gave up, played for each other and won the match against considerable odds.

In addition, the man of the match award for this game has probably been the tightest call of the season so far. Carl Gabbitas made an exceptionally strong claim with 31 runs and 3 wickets, and Rem Fiorini put in a decent shift behind the stumps. However, for his quickfire performance with the bat which gave MPCC a defendable total they didn't deserve and the accuracy of the bowling at the death to secure the victory, the man of the match goes to Graham Footitt.

Apologies

Please accept my apologies for not being terribly punctual with the match reports, given a game has gone by now, I am going to skip a report for the match against Bingham however in the interests of history, I can confirm the Man of the Match award for that game went to Andy Wagstaff for his innings of 45.

Fixture Saved!!

After many phonecalls and a not insignificant amount of begging, Sunday's fixture against Coddington has been saved thanks to Mansfield & Pleasley Cricket Club.

The match will be played at the Quarry Ground, which can be found at the back of Delamere Drive, Mansfield. Entrance to the ground is through some metal gates on Delamere Drive which double up as an entrance also to the Spider Park car park.

You've all had an email asking for your availability, as usual, a swift response appreciated.

It's all Going Wrong!

Who'd run a sports team???? Just to let you know, problems afoot. I still only have six for Sunday's game at Toton Sycamore. In addition to that woe, we don't have a pitch at either Thoresby or Clipstone for the games against Coddington on 25th July and Luxfer Gas on 8th August owing to cup matches. I am trying to get a pitch for those games, but as usual, clubs aren't very forthcoming. As a last resort, they may have to revert to away games or be cancelled if those teams can't host :-(

Footitt Strikes Down Aussies

MPCC reject Mark Footitt had a reasonable day at the office today when representing Derbyshire against Australia taking the wickets of Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus. If only he could have replicated that form for MPCC his future could have been so bright..................

Westminster Commitment Needed

I am now looking for a firm commitment accompanied by full payment for the trip to play Westminster Police CC on Thursday 23rd September. The cost is £30 (non-refundable) per player which is due no later than 8th August. The price includes return mini bus travel from MPS, fuel contribution, a game of cricket and a shared (twin) en suite room at Jury's Inn Watford. Naturally most of you will want an early night after the game but maybe there will be the opportunity to squeeze a quick pint in before everyone retires to celebrate the end of another season of misadventure.

Stats Updated

The stats are now updated to include Sunday's game against Bingham. I have decided to include the data from the abandoned game against Woodborough as it seemed unfair to everyone, particularly the bowlers, not to. Match report from Sunday to follow...........

First Home Game Cancelled

Radcliffe Rovers CC have contacted the club and given notice that they are unable to field a team for our match on 27th June.

Given the fact that England might (some hope!) be playing a last 16 match that day and the inevitable selection issues that will raise for ourselves with cancelled R/D and shift changes I do not intend to seek a fixture from elsewhere.

Directions To Woodborough

I am sure you all know where the village of Woodborough is, the ground can be found on Lingwood Lane off the main drag through the village immediately past or immediately before the church depending on which way you've entered the village.

Once on Lingwood Lane, the cricket club can be found next to the tennis club on the left. There is a car park and last year they ran a little bar (can't say that will be the case this year), but it is a really nice place if your thinking of bringing some support!

Batting Averages

Thankyou to those that have pointed it out, yes the batting the stats are out of date. I ain't pratting about with a calculator all night for them to change again tomorrow!

MPCC Thrash Lowdham by 10 Wickets

It was important that MPCC got back into the winning habit quickly after the disappointment of losing to an Upton side they could have achieved so much more against.

Winning the toss, Pete Quinn put the home side in to bat on a very green wicket in perfect summers evening conditions.

With regular opener Spike Davis away on holiday, Pete took slightly unconventional decision to start with pace at one end with Carl Gabbitas paired with the slow right arm of Brian Costello at the other.

The decision worked! A variation in pace coupled with spectacular fielding from Paul Fenwick taking all three catches at backward short leg saw early wickets fall to both Brian and Carl with the hosts finding themselves 1 for 3 after only three overs!

Playing 18 rather than 20 overs gave opportunity's to other players to have a bowl and debutant Mick Booth was next in replacing Carl with Eggy taking over from Brian. Boothy started out clearly nervous under the weight of expectation playing with a 2 stone bat carry's. Having found his natural pace and rhythm however Mick had the batsmen floundering, taking the wicket of Noake plumb LBW with a peach (well, a cricket ball actually, but you know what I mean).

The following batsmen however where in for the long hall. Daz Hall and Andy Hubbard were brought in to change the attack and whilst both bowled well, neither managed to dislodge either man with Daz in particular being unlucky with a dropped catch falling in his second over.

Sensing the need for a wicket, Carl Gabbitas and Brian Costello were brought back into the attack and again the decision was rewarded as Carl took his second wicket, dispatching Lowdhams Manners for 27.

The wickets then began to tumble again as two run outs followed to see the hosts eventually finish 83/7.

The skipper stuck with the by now familiar opening pair of Daz Hall and Neil Eggleston. From the sidelines, it was difficult to pin down what was more entertaining, the flurry of boundary's from both bats or the constant battle between the pair to keep the strike!

The Lowdham attack was not up to the task with Daz and Eggy seeing off what was initially considered a competitive total in just 12.1 overs with Eggy finishing on 36* and Daz with a welcome return to form on 46*.

Overall this was a really satisfying performance, not just because of the emphatic nature of the result, but because of the manner in which we played as a team. The team were committed in every aspect of the match and the bowling and fielding were much improved. If we can continue in that form going into the next game, Woodborough have a match on their hands!

As per every week, the players involved did not make man of the match selection easy, but this week had perhaps more candidates than both. Paul Fenwick lead the way in the field with an outstanding display and Daz Hall was back to form with both a 46* and a very economical bowling display. However, having been pipped to the accolade in almost every game so far, Brian Costello's outrageous figures of 4 overs, 3 maidens, 5 runs, 2 wickets make him a well deserved man of the match.

Extra's....My Favourite Subject

Just got back from watching Notts play Essex in the LV County Championship. Essex conceded 16 extra's in their first 3 overs of bowling! It can obviously happen to anyone!!

Revised Start Time At Lowdham

For those that are playing, please be aware that the game at Lowdham on Wednesday 2nd June is now a 6.30pm start, not 6pm as originally stated. The game is 18 overs per side, not 20 as previously stated. Not like Lowdham to change thier minds eh!?

Police Slump To Record Defeat at Upton

Where to begin? The weather was almost perfect, the setting idyllic, the team one of the stronger ones we've put out yet it all went badly wrong.

Winning the toss it was a true no-brainer to bat first, given the heat and what looked like a batter's paradise of wicket. As usual, the trusted pairing of Daz Hall and Neil Eggleston took to the field to open the batting and set up the foundations for what everybody hoped would be a big score.

Starting steadily, the pair began to build a partnership by not taking too many risks and feeding off bowling error rather chasing the runs. The heat was harsh and with boundary's proving hard to come by, the pair appeared to feel the effect of the constant trudge of running regular one's and two's. Drinks came with the opening pair still at the crease and everybody looking forward to Eggy and Daz pulling the trigger with bigger shots as the overs went by and MPCC kept wickets in the hutch (oh yeah! I watch Cricket A.M!!) It was not to be however as just after reaching the 20 over milestone Daz was trapped LBW for 17.

Spike Davis came in at 3, minus the patience implant we all hoped he'd had fitted over the Winter. Thank heavens it was missing! Spike started as he meant to go on, hitting hard and far and bringing some welcome boundary's to the scorebook. Inspired no doubt by Spike's Gayle esque big hitting, Eggy sought to come down the track at the bowlers. Whilst the right thing to do in response to some ridiculously slow, flighty bowling, it was to be his undoing as a big swing and a miss saw him stumped for 37.

Glenn Longden made a welcome return to the fold at No.4 and with two hitters at the crease, the rest of the team sat back and waited for the fireworks. The fireworks came but were shortlived as despite finding the boundary a number of times in short succession Spike didn't quite catch one and found himself caught for 23.

Pete Quinn came in at No.5 looking to build on the fairly respectable start he had made with the bat the previous week and soon found himself in the box seat as Glenn was bowled only five balls after his arrival looking to go big off the bowling of Upton's Gillian for 16.

Pete Quinn fell 2 balls later, cutting a delivery beautifully from the bowling of Anderson only to see it caught at knee height in the covers by probably the oldest man on the field!

With the team having only just crept into three figures and with 16 overs of the innings left, the expectation upon the shoulders of Carl Thurlby and Brian Costello to steady the ship mounted. It wasn't to be however as no sooner had Pete Quinn got back in the dressing room to remove his pads, he was joined by Brian, caught for 2 having mistaken a fielder for an umpire.

The collapse was well underway as Rich Blackwell strode onto the field, carrying his bat a little like a lumberjack might carry an axe. Rich and Carl tried to get something going but it began to feel like too little too late as their efforts were only rewarded by the fall of further wickets with Carl bowled for 5 and Rich departing in identical fashion for 3.

Graham Footitt and Rem Fiorini represented the tail and MPCC's last hope of salvaging a decent total. Graham was dispatched quickly, bowled for 0 leaving last man Graham Allen to join Rem for frankly whatever we could get out of it.

The pair played well together, with Rem in particular striking the ball true and calling the runs. Graham made a valiant attempt at matching Rem's enthusiasm for runs but was bowled hitting across a straight ball for 4 leaving Rem to retire 10 not out and Police all out for 141 in the 34th over.

MPCC took to the field for Upton's innings knowing they had a mountain to climb. With regular new ball merchant Carl Gabbitas overseas, the captain looked to Spike Davis and Graham Footitt to open the bowling.

Both started well with Spike in particular demonstrating a much improved line from the previous week. Upton have some very useful opening batters and the despair was there for all to see as Spike had two very convincing LBW appeals turned down in quick succession. Luck just didn't seem to be with Police as Graham too got nick after nick which either fell short of a fielder or squirted to the boundary.

Looking to mix up the pace, Daz Hall and Brian Costello were brought on. Brian bowled with his usual ease which despite the odd (and in some circumstances very harshly called) wide ball slowed Upton's openers down. Daz struggled to find his rhythm and was clearly frustrated as everything he tried seemed to be matched by the batsmen.

The heads began to drop and the reality that this was Upton's day began to sink in.

The gloom was lifted temporarily as Brian, bowling his whole allocation straight through as per the previous week dispatched Upton's Beaumont, making the catch from his own bowling.

Eggy was then brought on to inject some pace, which he did and which was rewarded with the second wicket in quick succession as he found Jones middle stump.

The game by now was over however and Upton cruised to victory by 8 wickets with 14 overs to spare.

It is easy to point the finger at umpire's or blame conditions but having had time to reflect, this game could, with a little more luck, have been so different. There were some real positives to take away. The fielding definitely continues to improve, with Rem Fiorini and Graham Allen in particular being the standout fielders. The batting, despite the collapse, was born far more out of panic than not being able to cope with the bowling. The bowling on another day would have yielded earlier wickets and the game could have been different.

As a team we need to accept that we are not the strongest batters but resist the temptation to put all the responsibility on Daz and Eggy's shoulders. The openers will get out, it's a fact, it will happen most matches and therefore the rest of use have to be prepared to go in after them and finish what they started, not panic and hit everything across the line in pursuit of quick boundary's and be bowled out inside 10 overs like this match.

As for man of the match, the decision was not made purely on statistics but on attitude and what should have been. Despite not achieving the highest score of the day, the manner in which Spike Davis took it to the bowlers gave the whole team a lift and without that quick 23 we would have been in a much worse position. In addition, Spike's bowling definitely had the batsmen in trouble and on another day would have given us exactly what we needed to turn the match around. As such, this weeks man of the match goes to Spike Davis.

Police Stroll To Opening Win

It was all sunshine, sheep and church bells as MPCC arrived in dribs and drabs at Youlgraves quaint and quirky ground on the outskirts of the village. Winning the toss, Pete Quinn put the home side in to bat, much to the Youlgrave skippers obvious disappointment.

As always, Pete handed the new ball to Carl Gabbitas who didn't disappoint with another opening spell of consistent line and length which gave the batsmen very little to go at.

At the other end Spike Davis did similar and despite apparently struggling a little at times with the peculiar slant of the wicket bowled an unbelievably economical spell of four overs in which the batsmen only scored four runs!

Despite the good start, it was clear from the off that neither batsmen were looking to take a risk and were settling in for the afternoon. Looking for a wicket, Pete brought in his next pairing of Neil Eggleston and Darron Hall. In a repeat of the Gabbitas/Davis spell, as the batsmen continued to refuse to attempt any kind of shot, the likelihood of a wicket dwindled.

As a sense of frustration grew in the field, slow right arm merchant Brian Costello was brought in to mix up the pace. Brian started well and never looked back, bowling a line and length that left the batsmen unsure as how to play him. The bowling change worked and Brian's accuracy was soon rewarded with the wicket of Youlgrave skipper Dave Tarlton, caught LBW.

Supporting at the other end, Carl Thurlby continued his introduction to the bowling attack having been used for the first time in the previous game at Thorseby Colliery. Once the nerves settled and accuracy overtook pace, Carl bowled a consistent four overs, narrowly missing out on a wicket when he found the bottom edge of Fiddlers bat, only for keeper Pete Quinn to be out of position and unable to take the catch.

As Brian continued, he made it impossible for the skipper to take him off as originally intended after four overs and stayed on to ultimately bowl through his eight over allocation. After Carl's four over's, Brian was joined by a returning Darron Hall. The Captain's faith was quickly repaid as Brian took his second wicket, taking a mid rift catch from his own bowling to dispatch Buckle.

At the other end, despite struggling to find his rhythm bowling from a different end to his first four overs, Darron looked dangerous when he hit the mark and found the top of off stump in his 6th over to send Howley back to the pavilion.

MPCC sensed the breakthrough when Youlgraves McMahon stepped up to put a halt to the early celebrations. Reminding the bowlers what happens to a short ball, both bowlers felt the pain as a flurry of fours were followed by a big six over the pavilion and Police feared the fightback. Youlgraves hope was to be shortlived however as in an act of almost poetic retribution Darron Hall yet again found off stump to send McMahon back almost as quickly as he had appeared, finishing his 8 overs on 2/26 with 3 maidens.

Brian, undeterred by the incessant bickering among the visitors as to how many overs he had bowled (West Notts College have maths for beginners classes starting September chaps) finished his spell in style taking a third wicket as Youlgraves Ward went big only to find a safe pair of hands belonging to Carl Thurlby in the deep.

Looking to finish the job, Pete brought back pace in Gabbitas from the pavilion end and Neil Eggleston at the......other end.

The runs at this point had almost dried up for the visitors with it becoming apparent that Youlgraves opener Fiddler was hanging on for his fifty. Carl Gabbitas, with no sense of charity at all saw to it that this was not to be the case, smashing Fiddlers stumps out the ground with a beautiful delivery with the poor guy 2 runs short.

Neil Eggleston continued where he left off, taking Enderby LBW and bowling Enderby Jnr in the process leaving MPCC chasing 122 for the win after 40 overs.

MPCC took to the chase with a new opening pairing of Darron Hall and Neil Eggleston. With the target not requiring a great deal of risk taking the pair set about easing themselves into their innings, taking what the bowlers gave them rather than forcing the quick win.

The strike changed regularly as both batsmen hit ones and twos, interspersed with boundary's when the bowlers let them. Sadly, just as Darron was getting into his stride, he misjudged a delivery from paceman McMahon to be caught LBW for 10.

Pete Quinn came in at three, looking to make a decent start to the season with the bat and improve on last year. Having agreed a strategy with Eggy ("don't do nuthing crazy dude") the pair set about cultivating a partnership. And cultivate they did as Pete supported Neils bigger shots with ones and twos. Despite a few scares coming out of Pete's insistence on playing across the line when he gets bored, the pair successfully chased down the remaining runs with 20 overs to spare as Pete made 25 and Neil a very impressive 75.

Overall, a satisfying opening win against admittedly weaker opposition. What was pleasing was that the fielding was far improved over the effort against Thorseby the previous week. The team played like a team and supported each other which was great to see. As far as improvement goes, the bowlers and wicket keeper still have work to do with regard to the extra's column. Overall MPCC gifted Youlgrave a massive 37 of their 121 total. Some may say that in this case it was a blessing in keeping the game going but nevertheless, we shall meet teams starting this Sunday at Upton where we simply cannot afford to give away so many runs and expect to compete.

As far as man of the match goes, a number of players put forward a compelling case, in particular Brian Costello with an outstanding bowling display, but for his efforts with the bat and the ball, the man of the match was awarded to a deserving Neil Eggleston.

Bowling Figures
Carl Gabbitas 8 overs 14 for 1 (3 Maidens)

Spike Davis 4 overs 4 for 4 (3 Maidens)

Darron Hall 8 overs 2 for 26 (3 Maidens)

Availability Required

Now the rust has been duckoiled at Thorseby, the appetite for cricket should be revitalised we hope. As such, your availability is required for the trip to Youlgrave on Sunday May 16th for a 2pm start. I know it's perhaps a little further afield than normal, but Youlgrave presents us with true "village cricket" and should we get the weather it will be a great day out for friends and family too. I know some have been good enough to provide me with availability already but for the rest, as usual, a swift response would be appreciated.

Wide Balls & Dropped Catches Cost Police!

Some food for thought was definitely served up as MPCC took on Thorseby Colliery U18 in a 20/20 match played out in gloomy conditions at Fourth Avenue Edwinstowe. Taking to the field with only nine players to field first, MPCC had their work cut out from the start. But some strong, consistent, bowling from Carl Gabbitas soon settled any apprehension as it appeared early doors that Thorseby were perhaps not going to pose the threat with the bat that had been expected. Carl's accuracy was rewarded as early as the first over when Thorseby's C. Murphy chipped the 5th ball up allowing Rem Fiorini to take the catch.

Spike Davis took the opposite end to Carl and initially struggled to replicate the devastating line he has been producing in net's to the dislike of everybody's legs! Having started with a flurry of wide balls, Spike found his rhythm against left-hander Willis, clean bowling the batsmen with the last ball of the over.

Carl Gabbitas returned for his second over and picked up where he left off with great line & length which yielded another wicket for the bowling machine as Thoresby's Tyson edged one into wicketkeeper Pete Quinn's gloves for the catch. With the home side at 9 for 3, MPCC began. to believe that Thorseby were there for the taking.

After one more over, Spike and Carl were replaced by Darron Hall and Graham Footit, followed by Brian Costello and Carl Thurlby. Despite no lack of effort, the early work was slowly unpicked as a series of dropped catches and a horror story of an extra's column assisted the home side in putting on another 68 run's before the next wicket fell with Spike Davis taking the catch from bowling of Darron Hall. The run out of Thoresby's Walker followed with great work from Carl Gabbitas seeing him throw a direct hit at the stumps from his own bowling.

Graham Footit continued to contribute with a great two over spell at the death taking two catches from his own bowling and cleaning up Thorseby's Wiggleswade with the last ball of the innings to leave MPCC requiring 110 to win.

MPCC took to the field in confident mood but openers Darron Hall and Brian Costello soon found out that the home side were perhaps a better bowling unit than there their batting may have suggested. As the light began to fade it wasn't getting any easier and Darron Hall was soon to find himself walking, bowled by Walker, an ex-team mate of all people, for an uncharacteristically low 6 runs.

Brian, sensing what needed to be done held up his end well (fnarr!) and forged a useful partnership with no.3 Carl Gabbitas. Despite regular scoring however, the required rate continued to climb as both batsmen struggled to get the ball to the boundary consistently and it was one slash to far for Carl as he was eventually caught for 22.

Richard Blackwell came in at no.4 with a reputation as a big hitter. No doubt rusty at not having played for a couple of years, Richard too found it difficult to connect and the responsibility was quickly falling to Brian to make the runs. As per Gabbitas, it was not long for the catch came as Brian tried in vain to go over the top having contributed an impressive 33.

Pete Quinn came in at no.5 with the required rate at the point where only boundary's would suffice. With the light seriously in question and consistently straight, quick bowling, Pete only lasted 5 balls before being cleaned up taking a big swing trying to rescue the match.

Spike Davis came next only to see Richard Blackwell bowled in Quinn fashion almost immediately for 2 runs.

Rem Fiorini was next but the match was virtually lost with Police eventually ending up 26 runs short at 84/5.

As an exercise in blowing the cobwebs off the match was very useful and as we ease ourselves into the Summer ahead I am sure some of the flabby fielding and wild bowling will sort itself out. In total, the team gave away 26 extra's, an ironic number when one looks at how many we fell short. It is unrealistic to expect to play a game where no extra's are conceded (particulary if the wicket keeper continues to celebrate BEFORE the ball has hit the stumps, only to find it flying over the top and disappearing to the boundary rope for 4!) but I doubt anybody in the side will be happy with that figure.

As for man of the match, well, as usual there was more than one candidate. Brian Costello entered a strong bid with his 33 runs, as did Graham Footit with a three wicket haul including two caught & bowled. However, with impressive bowling figures of 2/16 off four overs, a direct hit throw for the run out and a contribution of 22 runs, the man of the match goes to a deserving Carl Gabbitas.

Westminster Police Date Change

Our fixture away at Westminster Police has changed to Thursday 23rd September 2010. A better night for beers hopefully!

Unlucky Dixy

It is with regret that I have to report that Wayne Dicks is out for the season with a re-occurrence of the back injury that saw him miss 2009. Wayne attended nets on 24th March and looked in good form for someone who hadn't bowled for almost two years but sadly the hour in the nets confirmed that the back still wasn't up to it. I'm sure you will all join me in wishing Dixy as speedy a recovery possible and chin up mate....we can always use a scorer!

Outdoor Practice

A few have asked about an outdoor practice, prior to the start of our competitive (ok, ok....I know that's stretching it a bit) games. Our first game as those that read the blog will know is May 5th, a 20/20 affair against Thoresby Colliery U18. As such, the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday before would probably be best. I know it will be cold and we will have to kick off around 5pm and be done for about 7pm.
An outdoor practice has historically taken the form of a mini game among ourselves, it is a chance to bat with the added inconvenience of fielders, bowl without the odd results an indoor net can produce and gives yours truly the opportunity to injure myself diving about behind the stumps.
I will happily organise such a practice if people will turn up. Last year I tried the same and there was only me, Gabby and Brian and frankly I felt a bit of a goon where Clipstone Colliery CC were concerned.
So if you want it, support it..........please let me know what you all want to do ASAP.

Footit Strikes

Mark Footit, Derbyshire fast bowler and MPCC reject got his career at his new club underway in fine fettle in a pre-season game at Somerset by dislodging former England crybaby Marcus Trescothick! We are of course all sorry that Mark couldn't command himself a regular 1st team spot with MPCC and no longer dodging dogs*it at Somersall Park and other illustrious council pitches has no doubt left a hole in his life.......but we're glad to see he's making the best of it.

End of Season Awayday, Get Your A/L In!!!

Following a combination of requests for some kind of tour and some kind of end of season social, I hope to have successfully combined the two together for what should be a great day of cricket followed by an end of season social! On Wednesday 22nd September 2010 we are set to play the Westminster Police Cricket Club at the Metropolitan Police Bushey Sports Club in Hertfordshire (off the M1, not too far from Watford).

http://www.metpolicebushey.co.uk/

Because of lighting restrictions, I have agreed to a midday start for a 40 over match. My proposal is that we then go on to celebrate the end of another season by sharing a social beer or ten. Naturally, for us to get the best out of it, an overnight stay would be in order and I am currently looking into mini-bus based transport and appropriate accommodation which I am sure the club will be in a position to subsidise. I understand that for most of us this may well have annual leave implications, hence getting it sorted early so you can all start building your TOIL up! I hope as many of you as possible to take part in what should be a great day out. All we need is the weather!!

Saturday, 27 February 2010

New Fixture Added!

I'm pleased to announce that we shall again play Toton & Beeston Sycamore on 18th July. This will hopefully be a home fixture subject to Clipstone's availability but if not we will travel to them. Another team we owe one too given they were one of only two sides to beat us last year.

Ray Hang's Up His Spikes

It was with a heavy heart that I recently fielded a call from tricky spinner and opening batsman Ray Goddard to tell me that his cricketing days were over in favour of another sport involving windy walks combined with getting a little ball into a hole in the ground.

Needless to say Ray will be missed this season if for nothing else but having the bottle to open the batting, an ever increasing unpopular role in our squad!!

As such...........I will be looking for volunteers this coming season. Spike Davis has done it a few times and would be good if we could get him a patience implant fitted. Daz Hall is ever reliable as his average suggests but can't play every game because of shifts.

There were some great performances with the bat last year, Glenn Longden and Eggy in particular making some brilliant contributions outside the opening pair so c'mon boys..........have a think about opening!!!

Fixture Added

Radcliffe Rovers CC will visit us on 27th June. They gave us a bit of a clubbing last year so hopefully this time we'll get to give a bit back!

New Fixture Added!

Bingham CC will visit us on 4th July at Thoresby Colliery's ground. This will provide us with a good test against league opposition.

Fixture Nightmare!!

Could the world's smallest violin please start playing for the fixture secretary!? Having a bit of a nightmare this time round boy's. As I have mentioned to many of you we received a kind offer from Thoresby Colliery CC for use of their pitch for 2010 season. For me, the facilities are far better than Clipstone and whilst Clipstone have been very good to us it was too good an offer to turn down. Sadly, the majority of teams we play have their own pitch and are looking for fixtures sometimes as early as October!!! We on the other hand don't know when we can play at home until February time and even that is subject to cup draws. Hence a dilemma. Accept away fixtures and risk them falling dates that we could have played at home? Turn them down or "postpone" a decision until we have our home dates and risk having no games because everybody else is sorted? This year I have tried to do a bit of both and it has worked up to a point but I fancy we are still going to suffer a little fixture congestion. I strive to ensure that we never play back to back matches and try to keep it at two Sunday's a month as the majority of you have said that suits. Add that to the issue of getting fixtures against the right kind of teams (i.e. teams that aren't full Saturday 1st XI's looking to boost their ego by pummeling us into the floor) and the field is narrower than you might think. I suppose the moral of this bid for sympathy is for you all to be as understanding as possible when I have the finished fixture list because indications at the moment are that a few back to back weeks and a bit of driving are going to be inevitable..........but I'm doing my best!!!
